About the Pall-Ex hubs
Built on a brownfield site, the development of the Pall-Ex hub regenerated an extensive area of land. We planted scores of trees, reclaimed two natural ponds and employed special landscaping to control both noise and light pollution.
Purpose built at a cost of £12m, and opened by HRH The Princess Royal, Pall-Ex’s transhipment hub is unique, being the only non drive-through hub in the sector.Centrally located near junction 22 of the M1 motorway, the hub has a footprint of some 267,000 square feet. Its design prohibits vehicles from entering the interior, so maintaining an emission free environment for sensitive goods such as foodstuffs and electronic products.

Loading and unloading takes place under weatherproof canopies, protecting freight in the 42 easy access loading bays. The specially levelled hub floor ensures that fragile goods do not suffer from vibration during transhipment. The hub regularly handles up to 10,000 pallets per night.
Within the hub, Pall-Ex operates a fleet of fork lift trucks powered by environmentally friendly compressed natural gas, reducing emissions to an absolute minimum.
April 2008 saw the opening of an additional hub, strategically located very close to the M6 motorway, near Carlisle. Improved delivery efficiency to both Northern England and Scotland – and the resultant cost savings - are attracting new customers and new members alike with a subsequent reduction in environmental impact, too.
